Hello,
It's been a while since I've been here but I'm struggling a lot. I spent a while recovering and got myself to a healthy weight but I've since relapsed again.
I got the Mirena IUD in 2 months ago and have since gained XXlbs. Regardless of how much I restrict, the weight doesn't shift.
I feel ridiculously huge from my stint in recovery and with the IUD being put in and the gain from it, I feel horrendous. I want the IUD out but I also know that if it comes out I might just bleed forever. My periods are neverending (the most recent is 8 months) which is what prompted me to get it in the first place. I'm such between a rock and a hard place.

I know Mirena is partially hormonal, but I didn't think it was likely to cause gain. I've never had any weight related troubles related to it anyways.

Mirena should not cause weight gain. It is a weight-neutral form of birth control. Have you gotten any blood work done recently? To check your thyroid hormones, for instance? Sometimes prolonged restriction can have nasty effects on the endocrine system. You might want to ask your primary care doctor to check your thyroid-stimulating hormone and free T3 and T4 levels if you've gained a significant amount of weight out of the blue. Would be horrible to put your amazing progress in jeopardy. Hang tight, there may be some answers lurking!
I attended medical school but am not working as a physician. PLEASE...when it doubt, get it checked out - by your own doctor.

Thank you both! It was stressing me out. Good to know about the mirena. I haven't had my blood levels checked in a while. I'll definitely do that. Thanks again!

I doubt it. A lot of other overlooked things can though. I think looking into the Mirena being responsible for any of these symptoms or issues is off track, however they seem linked in their nature so definitely try to find the source and talk to your gp and get the appropriate blood tests ! *hugs*
And also think about other types of hormones and imbalances that might have been underlying and triggered by the Mirena IF SO- when set off though removing the Mirena would be useless since the issue was underlying, and it will actually help having it by being the one steady (for sure) hormonal system in your body and well regulated. Just imagine all your hormones go batshit crazy lolLast edited by AXT; 08-21-2014 at 02:25 AM.
"If I have any taste, it s for hardly anything
but earth and stones.
Let us eat air, rock, coal, iron.
Turn, my hungers.
Feed, hungers, in the meadow of sounds!
Suck the gaudy poison of the convolvuli;
Eat, the stones a poor man breaks,
the old masonry of churches, boulders,
children of floods, loaves lying in the grey valleys! "
